Bilingualism affects childrens language and cognitive development Free Essays

The possibility that early bilingualism affects kids ‘s linguistic communication and cognitive development has long been a concern for parents and pedagogues. In the first half of the twentieth century, the predominating position was that bilingualism and second-language acquisition early in life made kids baffled and interfered with their ability to develop normal cognitive functions1 and win in educational environments.2 These thoughts were dramatically reversed in a landmark survey by Peal and Lambert3 that showed a general high quality of bilinguals over monolinguals in a broad scope of intelligence trials and facets of school accomplishment. We will write a custom essay sample on Bilingualism affects childrens language and cognitive development or any similar topic only for you Order Now Recent research has been more balanced, placing countries in which bilingual kids excel and others in which bilingualism has no consequence on their development. The inquiry sing the possible impact of bilingualism on kids ‘s development has ever been of import, but has progressively emerged as a important concern for modern societies and for Canada in peculiar. In add-on to the official committedness to a national policy of second-language acquisition and bilingualism, in-migration has transformed Canada into a rich multilingual and multicultural state. Public schools, particularly in major urban Centres, are home to big Numberss of kids for whom English or French is a 2nd linguistic communication. These kids represent an tremendous assortment of place linguistic communications and frequently constitute the bulk of kids in a individual schoolroom. Therefore, it is imperative that we understand the impact of these linguistic communication backgrounds on kids ‘s cognitive and educational hereafters. Information about the linguistic communication, cognitive and educational development of kids with varied linguistic communication backgrounds is indispensable to construe the public presentation of these kids in school and measure their development. For illustration, kids with limited proficiency in the linguistic communication of schooling are certain to see increased trouble in get bying both academically and socially, and it is of import to place these troubles in order to understand what intercession or remedial attacks are needed. The research is typically conducted in schoolrooms, frequently settings incorporating both multilingual and monolingual kids. The context in which the bilingualism or 2nd linguistic communication occurs is of import, even though it is non ever included as a formal facet of research probe. There is grounds that whether the kid ‘s place linguistic communication is in a bulk or minority state of affairs, is valued in the community and is used as a medium for literacy undertakings affects the kid ‘s lingual and cognitive outcomes.4 Therefore, the deductions of the kid ‘s linguistic communication experience should ideally be examined with careful attending to the societal and lingual factors that describe the kid ‘s societal and educational environment. The of import issues concern the cognitive and educational results for bilingual kids. First, it is necessary to set up whether linguistic communication acquisition returns at the same rate and in the same mode for kids who are larning two linguistic communications at the same time or are larning a 2nd linguistic communication after holding begun to get the hang one. Second, are kids able to get literacy accomplishments at school if they are either bilingual or larning a 2nd linguistic communication, particularly if their place linguistic communication is non the linguistic communication of direction? Finally, are at that place effects on normal cognitive development in footings of the kid ‘s ability to get new constructs or execute assorted computations ( e.g. arithmetic ) , particularly if school direction is in the kid ‘s weaker linguistic communication? There are three chief outcomes from this research. First, for general linguistic communication proficiency, bilingual kids tend to hold a smaller vocabulary in each linguistic communication than monolingual kids in their language.5 However, their apprehension of lingual construction, called metalinguistic consciousness, and is at least as good6 and frequently better7 than that of comparable monolinguals. Second, the acquisition of literacy accomplishments in these kids depends on the relationship between the two languages8 and the degree of proficiency in the 2nd language.9 Specifically, kids larning to read in two linguistic communications that portion a authorship system ( e.g. English and Gallic ) show accelerated advancement in larning to read ; kids whose two linguistic communications are written in different systems ( e.g. English and Chinese ) show no particular advantage, but neither do they show any shortage relation to monolinguals. The benefit of larning to read in two lin guistic communications, nevertheless, requires that kids be bilingual and non second-language scholars whose competency in one of the linguistic communications is weak. Third, bilingual kids between four and eight old ages old demonstrate a big advantage over comparable monolinguals in work outing jobs that require commanding attending to specific facets of a show and suppressing attending to deceptive facets that are outstanding but associated with an wrong response. This advantage is non confined to linguistic communication processing, but includes a assortment of non-verbal undertakings that require controlled attending and selectivity in such jobs as organizing conceptual classs, 10 seeing alternate images in ambitious figures, 11 and understanding the difference between the visual aspect and functional world of a deceptive object.12 The consequences of these surveies demonstrate that childhood bilingualism is a important experience that has the power to act upon the class and efficiency of kids ‘s development. The most surprising result is that these influences are non confined to the lingual sphere, where such influence would be expected, but extend every bit good to non-verbal cognitive abilities. In most instances, the kid ‘s grade of engagement with a 2nd linguistic communication, defined as the difference between bilingualism and second-language acquisition, is an of import variable that determines both the grade and type of influence that is found. Three forms of influence were noted in these surveies. One result is that bilingualism makes no difference, and monolingual and bilingual kids develop in the same manner and at the same rate. This was found for cognitive jobs such as memory- span development and linguistic communication jobs such as phonological consciousness. The 2nd is that bilingu alism disadvantages kids in some manner. The primary illustration of this is in the development of vocabulary in each linguistic communication. The 3rd form, and the most prevailing in our surveies, is that bilingualism is a positive force that enhances kids ‘s cognitive and lingual development, bettering entree to literacy if the two composing systems correspond and development of general executive procedures for all bilingual kids work outing a broad scope of non-verbal jobs necessitating attending and control. These executive control abilities are at the Centre of intelligent idea. Parents are frequently concerned that utilizing a non-community linguistic communication as the linguistic communication of their place will disfavor their kids. This plan of research provides solid grounds that the overpowering consequence of bilingualism in the place is positive. The disadvantages are comparatively minor and easy get the better of. The deductions for schooling are more complex. Children ‘s success in school is strongly dependent on their proficiency in the linguistic communication of direction, a relationship that holds for of import lingual activities ( e.g. larning to read ) , non-verbal computational topics ( e.g. mathematics ) , and content-based course of study ( e.g. societal surveies ) . In all these instances, kids must be skilled in the signifiers and significances of the school linguistic communication and be competent readers of that linguistic communication. Bilingual kids may non be at the same degree as their monolingual equals, and second-langu age scholars for whom English or French is non their place linguistic communication may hold non built up equal accomplishments in the instructional linguistic communication to win in schools. The grounds for the overpowering positive benefit of bilingualism, together with grounds that bilingual kids are non cognitively handicapped, indicates an of import function for schools in supplying a agency for these kids to construct up their linguistic communication accomplishments in the school linguistic communication so that they can be full participants in the schoolroom and harvest the most positive benefit from their educational experience. Accounting Theory & Contemporary Issues Organisations Consciousness

Question: Discuss about the Accounting Theory Contemporary Issues for Organisations Consciousness. Answer: Introduction The environmental impact of the business organisations consciousness has been increased all over the world in a drastic way. Thereby the contemporary business organisation focuses on the emphasis created for the development of effective business strategies with thereby helps in the enhancement of the policies for the creation of fruitful environment of the company. It thereby also helps in avoiding the critical issues that seems to be related to the unnecessary legal conditions raised in the environment of the organisation. Therefore, in order to create a fruitful environment in the organisation with the increment of profitability, the efforts are created for the development of the research and development part of the organisation (Sarker et al., 2016). It helps in the improvement of quality regarding the products produced by the organisation and thereby the product must depict environment friendly conditions for the creation of sustainable environment for the company. In this undert aken case study, it is observed that the Bio-sustainable Feed Company which is an Australian company seems to be focusing on the research and the development department for the development of the product. The product of the company consists of the Fish feed with thereby researching for the development of the quality of the product (R., 2016). The product development is made with the aim for making it a cost effective product, with keeping in mind of the environment friendly conditions. In this way the company seems to be able for enhancement of the profitability and at the same time the improvement of sustainability is taking place. Besides this the company need to focus on the establishing itself with the creation of social acceptance. Main Body Nature and Value to society of the research being done by BSF Ltd In this provided case study, the observation is made that the company Bio-sustainable Feed provides emphasis on their own CSR activities with thereby creating an drastic environment. As per the initiation made by the company, the sustainability for the organisation helps in the creation of effort for the organisation and thereby the effort of the research seems to be made with thereby creating the enhancement of the development department of the company. The research and the development department focus on the improvement of the profitability with creating constant works on the products (B. Rust, 2011). This helps in initialising the development of the products with thereby creating focus on the conditions and thereby the creation of the product seems to be created by the enhancement of the organisation. The development of the low environmental impact seems to be created with the reduction of usage of the natural resources and thereby the company tries to produce the product with the creating the usage of the wastage materials. Simultaneously, the reduction of usage of the natural resources helps in the reduction of the wastage materials and thereby the societal environment is kept clean. In this way the companys establishment is depicted with the establishment of the friendly environment for the company. In this provide case study which depicts that the Bio-sustainable Feed is trying to use the woodchip and the sugarcane residues along with the usage of wastage materials that are collected from the garbage and the dumps with the consideration of the food processing firms sewages. The usage of these materials helps in the reduction of the company and thereby the company reduces the use of the natural resources (Chung, 2016). In result to this, the quality products are products which provide the quality feeds to the fishes with lowering the cost of the production and thereby receiving an eco-friendly environment. It thereby also helps in invariable increment of the social acceptance for the company which thereby provides appropriate promotion for the company regarding the eco-friendly practices. The reduction of the environmental impact helps in the promotion of the eco-friendly practices for the company (Yang, 2015). The company with bringing improvement in the business activities hel ps in the creation of the social impact that promotes the environment friendly practices and thereby the acceptance of the company seem to be established with the creation of consciousness for the company. In this way the company seems to be increasing the profitability as well as the improvement in the quality of the products can be focused in an effective way. Problems with the early research done by BSF Ltd The problems that are depicted in this case study of Bio-sustainable Feed depicts the problems that rose during the continuation of the research process. With the variation of the research, the variation of process is focused with viewing the outcomes of each research in the form of the experiments (Weygandt, 2009). The first research mentioned in this process provides the judgment regarding the creation of sustainable environment of aquaculture feeds which seems to be based on the approaches made through the plant based feeds. The research executed helps in describing that the plant based feeds seems to be creating problems for the fish based feed and thereby the rate of the value of the 10 kg low value fish seems to equal to the 1 kg high value fish. It thereby provides a problem for the generation of huge rate of the materials which can be easily available from the resources (Sarker, Rahman and Alam, 2015). The generation of the actual conversion rate seems to be 30kg of the plant based feeds are values for 1kg high fish value feeds. This thereby provides the result that the 1/3rd of the fish died and also depicts the growth of the fish with lowering the life span. Henceforth the research failed to thrive and thereby the company taken an alternative initiative for the approach to be fruitfully executed. The process of the diversion of the food crops are depicted which seems to be another problem for the Bio-sustainable Feed Company (Rosen, 2005). This process executed seems to be benefitting the rich people and thenceforth the aquaculture conducted by the poor people seems to be at high risk and thereby the process of the benefits also lead to the malnutrition for the poor people. The production of the fish feeds are based on the important human nutritional components like omega 3 fatty acids and the company BSF initially used these components for feeding the fishes (Reymend and Pagare, 2016). The components on one hand increases the quality of fishes but on the other hand increases the cost which is the negative point for the company. Henceforth, the depriving of the poor classes from the society helps in creating a kind of objection for the people in the wide society. Discussing and defining the nature and differences between the research and development The research depicts the process of creation of new product with the consideration for the renovation of the old products and there by the company carries out the process of research for the increment of the quality of the product. It also helps in the increment of profitability with the creation of enhancement in the product line. It indicates the potential conduct that seems to be carried out by the help of the act considered and thereby the companys product can be improved by the method of the research conducted for the product (Qiu et al., 2012). In the case study of the Bio-sustainable Feed Company undertaken, the company seems to carrying out research for the enhancement of the fish feed products with the motive of reduction of the cost of the product, increment of profitability and the usage of the wastage products. Henceforth the research carried out by the company shows the sustainable environment created by the company with the enhancement of the business (Neuhusler and Fri etsch, 2012). It also provides the motive for the enhancement of product lines and henceforth research carried out depicts various results with the varying field of researches. It thereby helps the company to create a new innovative product that can be used by both the poor farmers and the rich companies depicted in this case study. The research development of the company indicates the appropriate process of the research carried out with depicting the environment of the company. The research development also depicts the enhancement of the product with depicting entire process of the research carried out for the product and thereby the enhancement of marketing for the product is also depicted with determining the cost of the product (Milburn, 2008). Product development depicts redesigning, implementing and the selling of the innovative product created by the company. The enhancement of the process for the development of the innovative product is depicted in the provided case study. It deals with the enhancement of the process regarding the enhancement of the product in reference to the fish feeds as mentioned in the case study (Mandal et al., 2010). Therefore the case study provides the appropriate implementation of the fish feed products with providing the positive outcomes regarding the experiment created. Henc eforth the company Bio-sustainable Feed provides appropriate development of the product with the creation of profitable and the sustainable environment. Assumptions and calculations based on the fair market value patent Innovation is depicted as the important means for the creation of competitive advantage in order to face the competitive market. Therefore the protection of the innovative ideas and the prevention of the patents of the organisation from the other organisations help in creating competitive advantage for the organisation. Patents are the forms that helps in securing the innovative ideas and the norms that are established by the organisation and thereby the creation of safety for the innovative ideas helps in the growth of the business (Belenzon, 2011). Thereby the patents become the crucial asset for the organisation. In the organisation of Bio-sustainable Feed, the significant values are estimated which is created in the context of the patents. The organisation also collects information for gathering the structure for estimating the value of the patent. It is an intangible asset which is shown in the balance sheet of the organisation. The research of using bacteria for the production of the fish feeds for the fishes from sugarcane, wood chips and the recaptured methane gas seems to be presenting the unique material for the innovation process carried out by the Bio-sustainable Feed Ltd (Christie, Rawnsley and Eckard, 2011). The cost seems to be estimated for the research which seems to be about $160 million AUD and another costs of $200 million AUD for the development of the costs in order to bring it to the market. With the consideration of organisation CSIRO i.e. commonwealth scientific and the industrial research organisation, the investment of about $500 million AUD is made for the patent created by the Bio-Sustainable Feed Ltd. The cost that was provides benefit to the BSF limited and thereby the total expense made by Bio-Sustainable Feed Ltd depicts $500 million AUD for the innovation or the research carried out and $200 million AUD for the creation of patent for the innovation or the research depicts the fish feeds (Daniel, 2013). In considering two year of patent span, the market value depicts $700 million AUD for the patent of the research made and also seems to be sold out by the company to the CSIRO organisation. The discount rate of about 8% per annum is created against the deal and thereby the value of the innovative idea created by the BSF Company seems to be increasing the value of the company with creating the impact of goodwill in the market. Henceforth the determination and the evaluation made for the company helps in the enhancement of the organisation and thereby the growth is observed (Droms and Wright, 2010). Journal entries for the RD transactions from 2013 to 2016 Particulars Debit ($) Credit ($) Grant 500 Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization 500 Alternative aquaculture feeds 100 Cash 100 Research 500 cash 500 Development cost 200 cash 200 Patent 700 Cash 700 In the provided case study, BSF receives a grant from the Commonwealth Scientific and the Industrial Research Organisation of amount $500 million AUD. From the received amount, BSF Ltd spends $100 million AUD on the creation of alternative aquaculture process with thereby depicting the feeds of the year. The journal entries shows the total cash received and the expenses created within the financial year 2013-2016. The grant received from the CSIRO has been appropriately utilised for the further research and development of the fish feeds in order to create an alternative structure for the aquaculture feeds (Hall, 2007). The investment of the project is seemed to be increased with the creation of appropriate valuation for the project and thereby the enhancement of the product seems to be introduced with creating the path of success for the company. The presentation of the journal entries helps in defining the studies that are depicted with the consideration of the research and developm ent process. The grant received from the CSIRO has been indicated in the above set of journal entries which depicts the main purpose of accounting for the purpose of storing, collecting and evaluating the transactions carried out by the company during the span of time (HILTON and O'BRIEN, 2009). Henceforth the research and development plays an important role for the enhancement of the structure for the organisation which is clearly depicted in the journal entries and thereby the considerations are made accordingly for the enhancement of the research. The development in prospects of the research is made regarding the fish feeds seemed to be depicted by providing specific information for the continuation of the next level of the research. Exclusive control of assertion made in prospect of the patent values The management that the BSF Ltd consists of provides the consideration of the prospects regarding the planning of the patent are mentioned in this case study. The case study also depicts the understanding of the case which seems o indicating the control measurements followed by the company BSF Ltd. it thereby helps in depicting the understandings with creating the control strategies for the appropriate execution of the process followed by the BSF Ltd for the creation of sustainable environment in the organisation (Holton, 2012). The control strategies also depicts the controllable usage of the bio-sustainable feeds that seems to be depicted in this case and thereby the creation of the enhancement of the project helps in measuring the control strategies depicted for the expenses created by the organisation BSF Ltd. The strategies that are included for the appropriate consideration of the research for the organisation are depicted below which are as follows:- The bio sustainable materials are used in order to prepare the food for the fishes and thereby the creation of the appropriate process is used for determining the usage of the wastages for the preparation process. For the growth of the high quality materials, the preparation of the high quality food must be undertaken in order to create an appropriate strategy for the continuation of the process. The appropriate usage of the product is depicted in this case study with continuing the preparation of food from the plants. Henceforth the appropriate consideration of this control strategy helps in the creation of the structure for the enhancement of process of research carried out by the organisation (Horngren, 2013). The expectations regarding the creation food for the fish feeds are made with the utilisation of the process for appropriate production. It also depicts the successful completion of the patent with determining the implementation strategies that are depicted for the research. The control measures also depict the reduction of the costs for the production with depicting the historical feedback system. It thereby also helps in creating an appropriate system which seems to be followed for the enhancement of the feeding for the fish (Karapanagiotidis, 2014). The issues regarding this case seem to be prohibited by the process of continuing the control structures and thereby the consideration of the control measures is depicted with depicting the case study. Hence the control measures helps in indicating the appropriate enhancement of the process and thereby the control measures are continued by the enhancement of the structure of the process carried out with creating an enhancement for the systematic improvement. Conclusion The overall strategies made for the research seems to be fruitfully executed by the BSF Ltd which helps in the enhancement of the company. The overall structure also depicts the utilization of the process and thereby the consideration of the system of fish feeding seems to be successfully executed. It thereby also helps in providing the control measurement process with indicating the values of the research and thereby the systematic improvements are made in the context for the evaluation of the fish feed research (Kew and Watson, 2012). Henceforth the research seems to be indicating the creation of the fruitful environment with creating sustainability, growth and profitability for the organisation BSF Ltd. The consideration of the case study helps in depicting the structures of the research carried out and thereby the consideration of the process seems to be creating the serious issues regarding the environment. The fish feed process research helps in mitigating the issues that are d epicted for the case study and thereby the research seems to be depicting the improvement of the issues faced by the organisation with the consideration of the appropriate control measures depicted during the continuation of research. Thirst For Freedom Essays - Slavery In The United States

Thirst for freedom HARRIET TUBMAN In 1820, Benjamin Ross and Harriet Greene both slaves in Buck Town Maryland gave birth to Araminta Greene also born a slave. Araminta lived some 90 years of hardship and peerless journeys to free her people from slavery. Cruelty and unbearable living conditions were a norm for these times. First, we'll need some background on the institution of slavery, which began in the early 15th and 16th century recorded in the ancient history of Babylon and Rome. Portuguese explores living east of Africa provided slave labor for Whites, West Indies and Spanish Plantation owners; in 1660 Virginia Law decreed slaves would serve their masters for life. With the development of plantation land and its five staples of produce Rice, Cotton, Sugar, Tobacco and Coffee required strenuous work to harvest. At the age of six Araminta was taken from her parents to live with James Cook, whose wife was a weaver, to learn the skills of weaving. James Cook would order her to guard his muskrat traps, which compelled her to wade through the water. Once she was sent when she was ill with the measles, and caught a cold from wading in the water and she grew very sick. Her mother convinced her master to take her away from the Cooks until she could recuperate. After she entered her teens she was hired out as field hand. In the fall of that same year slaves were required to work evenings, cleaning up wheat, husking corn, etc. On one afternoon one of the slaves of a farmer named Barrett, left work and went to the village store without permission. The overseer and Araminta followed him. When the slave was found, the overseer swore he would whip the slave, and called on Araminta and others to help tie him. She refused and as the man ran away the overseer picked up a two-pound store weight from the coun ter and threw it at the fugitive, but it fell short and struck Araminta a stunning blow on her head. It was over two months before she recovered from a stupor or but she still seem lethargy at times years later. After this she lived for six years with John Stewart working in the house. She later was hired out to Dr. Thompson, son of her master's guardian. While employed the rudest labors drove oxen, carted, plowed and did work of a man. This would prepare her for deliver her people from bondage later in life. Araminta was influenced by what she had learned of the Bible from her Parents. In 1844 Araminta married John Tubman and took her mother's first name. In 1849 after her master had died, she decided to escape from slavery. If she didn't run away it was rumored she and her brothers were to be sold to a chain gang. Making her way to freedom in Pennsylvania without any friend and no education she relied on her only skill as a house servant. While employed she managed to save enough money to return to the South to free her sister and her two children. A year later she began her transition to conductor of the Underground Railroad, this informal system arose as a loosely constructed network escape routes that originated in the South, intertwined throughout the North eventually ended in Canada. An escaped slave herself Tubman earned the nickname Moses for heroic exploits in freeing slaves with her death defining acts of courage. Harriet successfully returned 19 times freeing over 300 slaves without one being recaptured. Because of her success the Union Army sought her h elp to get behind enemy lines. But because the Civil War didn't have freedom of her people as goal she refused the Union bid for her services. After Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation, she was hired as a union spy, scout, and hospital nurse as well as a prolific speaker to her people. Harriet never received any monetary support for her work although union officers were been paid $15 dollars a month. While in the services of the union army she nearly lost her plot of land in Auburn, New York. But with the help of friends and the sale of her manuscript she was able to save

Understanding Convenience Samples

Understanding Convenience Samples The process of statistical sampling involves selecting a collection of individuals from a population. The way that we do this selection is very important. The manner in which we select our sample determines the type of sample that we have. Among the wide variety of  types of statistical samples, the easiest type of sample to form is called a convenience sample. Definition of Convenience Samples A convenience sample is formed when we select elements from a population on the basis of what elements are easy to obtain. Sometimes a convenience sample is called a grab sample as we essentially grab members from the population for our sample. This is a type of sampling technique that does not rely upon a random process, such as we see in a simple random sample, to generate a sample. Examples of Convenience Samples To illustrate the idea of a convenience sample, we will think of several examples. It is really not very hard to do this. Just think of the easiest way to find representatives for a particular population. There is a high likelihood that we have formed a convenience sample. To determine the proportion of green MMs produced by a factory, we count the number of green MMs in our hands that we took out of the package. To find the mean height of all third-grade students in a school district, we measure the first five students who are dropped off in the morning by their parents. In order to know the mean value of homes in our town, we average the value of our home with our neighbors homes.Someone wants to determine which candidate is likely to win an upcoming election, and so she asks everyone in her circle of friends who they intend to vote for.  A student is working on a survey of students attitudes toward college administrators, and so he talks to his roommate and other people on the floor of his residence hall. Problems with Convenience Samples As indicated by their name, convenience samples are definitely easy to obtain. There is virtually no difficulty in selecting members of the population for a convenience sample. However, there is a price to pay for this lack of effort: convenience samples are virtually worthless in statistics. The reason that a convenience sample cannot be used for applications in statistics is that we are not assured that it is representative of the population that it was selected from. If all of our friends share the same political leanings, then asking them who they intend to vote for in an election tells us nothing about how people across the country would vote. Furthermore, if we think about the reason for random sampling, we should see another reason why convenience samples are not as good as other sampling designs. Since we do not have a random procedure to select the individuals in our sample, although our sample is likely to be biased. A randomly selected sample will do a better job of limiting bias.

However, if you get a low ACT score, your chances of gaining admission to a selective college could be slim to none. There is no specific ACT score requirement to be admitted to the school of your dreams, but your ACT score will increase or decrease your likelihood of getting in. In this article, I will discuss ACT requirements for college and how to determine your target ACT score to help you reach your college goals. Will Your ACT Score Guarantee Your College Admission? Unfortunately, there is no ACT score that can guarantee your college admission, especially at the most selective schools. Highly selective schools routinely reject students with perfect ACT scores. Most of these colleges use holistic review in their admissions processes, so they evaluate your GPA, extracurriculars, recommendations, personal essay, and your ACT score. Your ACT score is only one component of your application as a whole, albeit a pretty important one. However, there are colleges where your GPA combined with your ACT score can guarantee your admission. Most of the colleges that offer this type of guaranteed admission are state schools, and the offer is only extended to in-state residents. For example, at the University of California, if your grades and standardized test scores combined are in the top 9% of California high school grads and you're not accepted to any of the UC campuses you apply to, you'll be offered a spot at another campus if space is available. Other states have similar automatic admission programs if you achieve a certain GPA and ACT score. Some states with these programs include Iowa, Nevada, Texas, Mississippi, and Missouri. Make sure to check the admissions requirements on a college's website to see if automatic admission is offered and what you need to do to be eligible. What ACT Score Do You Need to Increase Your Chances of Admission? The ACT score required to improve your odds of getting into a school varies depending on the school. Generally, you should aim for at least the 75th percentile ACT score of that college for your score to positively influence your application. Most schools publish their 25th and 75th percentile scores. The thinking behind this strategy is that if your ACT score is well above the score of the majority of students at the school, then your ACT score will definitely help you when your application is reviewed. Remember that if you score above the 75th percentile for a school, then you've scored higher than at least 75% of the students who go there. Your scores will compare favorably to those of current students and that will significantly improve your chances of gaining admission. If your ACT score is closer to the 25th percentile, then another component of your application should be outstanding to have a realistic shot at admission. If your score is significantly lower than the 25th percentile, your odds of getting in are extremely slim. How to Find a School's 25th/75th Percentile ACT Scores To find a school's 25th and 75th percentile ACT scores, you can use the PrepScholar database. We've made this task rather easy for you. Plug in "(school name) ACT requirements prepscholar" to your favorite search engine and you'll get the answers you're looking for. For example, if you're searching for Harvard's information, just Google "Harvard ACT requirements prepscholar." To see some examples, you can check out our pages for MITandRPI. Also, make sure to find out a school's policy regarding superscoring. Superscoring is when a college will consider only your highest score on each section out of all of the ACTs you've taken. PrepScholar college profiles provide that info to you as well. How to Determine Your College ACT Requirements When preparing for the ACT, you should have a target score. Your target score can influence your studying, test-taking strategies, and motivate you to keep improving your ACT skills. Here's how to determine your ACT target score. Make a list of the schools you're interested in applying to. The average of their 75th percentile ACT scores will be your target score. Your section target scores should match your composite target. However, if you're applying to an engineering or science program, your math and science scores can be slightly higher. Similarly, if you're applying to a humanities program, your reading and English scores can be slightly higher. For more thorough information about ACT target scores, check out the post on what's a good ACT score. Will Getting a Low ACT Score Prevent You From Going to College? Getting a low ACT score may prevent you from getting into the college of your dreams, but it shouldn't stop you from going to college. There are a number of schools that don't even require ACT scores. Also, the majority of community colleges don't require ACT scores. You always have the option of going to a 2-year college and transferring to a 4-year university. Keep in mind that if you do poorly on your ACT, high grades in college prep classes can compensate for low test scores. How well you do in four years of high school is more important to colleges than how well you do on one standardized test. There may not be strict ACT requirements for specific colleges or college in general, but doing well on your ACT will give you more college options and increase the likelihood that you'll be admitted to the colleges you want to attend. Tax advantages on buying your own home in Canada Research Paper

Tax advantages on buying your own home in Canada - Research Paper Example Home ownership is a critical subject that needs to be handled with care; in the recent past, most Canadians have never had the coveted opportunity of owning a home. Nevertheless, with the tax advantages in place more Canadians are having the opportunity to own a home. Every time one requires to purchase a house such a person must consider of the tax benefits involved in such an investment. The government has made frantic efforts to ensure that citizens are empowered to own homes. Therefore, households which purchase houses usually make a great deal in savings. However, several restrictions and procedures control the tax benefits. It is therefore, critical that deliberate efforts are taken by potential homeowners to consult with several tax professionals such as accountants to help them to fully understand the benefits of owning a home. The subsequent paragraph illuminates the tax benefits of owning a home in Canada as well as Professor Tristani’s view that owning a home may no t be advantageous after all. Tax Benefits of Owning a home Deductions on mortgage interest are one tax benefit that comes with owning a house in Canada. The Government in a bid to ensure that more households own homes has partnered with several commercial financial institutions such as banks with a view of effecting deductions on mortgage interest when the applicants meet some standards set (Canada, 2006). In fact, it is very possible for individuals to be offered tax deductions for the interest payable on mortgage taken for purchase, of home or for improvement of home. It is worth noting that although there are several deductions on mortgage interest the procedures involved are quite elaborate. Therefore, expert guidance is required so that a potential homebuyer does not miss the benefits that come with it (Andersen, 2009). Access Access to mortgage is one critical achievement that the government can take credit for removal of the many restrictions that had barred several people fr om owning homes. For example, currently Canadians are not required to offer collateral on mortgagees, and this means that even people with average income who do not have assets have the opportunity of owning a home. Moreover, the many bureaucracies that characterized application to obtain a mortgage have been reduced considerably. What is more, even the rate of interest on mortgage is at all-time low at 4%. The other tax benefit of owning a home can be realized from the deductions that are pegged to home improvement and repairs. Improvement and repairs to home are crucial in the sense that they result in increasing the value of the house, make it to be used for a different purpose, or increasing its value. However, homeowner must be alive to the fact that ordinary cost incurred with maintaining the home do not qualify for deductions (Higgins, 2004). It is currently possible for people to secure loans for repairs and improvement of the value of the house. This possibility has gone a long way to ensuring that majority of Canadians lengthen the useful period of their homes. When the individual applying for the mortgage follows the right procedures and meets the requirement for reduction, the individual will be offered a deduction on interest for a mortgage taken to facilitate repairs and maintenance of the house. Deducting of points and closing of costs is yet another tax benefit that is inherent in home ownership. Every other time when one secures a mortgage, such a mortgage is charged costs referred to as lender points. The faster the one pays up the mortgage and accruing interest the more points he is awarded. This means that depending on the points one has he can qualify for deduc

Contemporary issues in accounting and finance Essay

Contemporary issues in accounting and finance - Essay Example A recent FEE (Federation of European Accountants) publication states that â€Å"an individual’s objectivity must be beyond question when conducting and reporting on a statutory audit† (FEE). This paper will critically evaluate this statement with particular reference given to some fundamental financial/accounting/auditing concepts and external studies. Objectivity of statutory auditors There are many situations where a statutory auditor’s objectivity would be questioned when auditing financial statements of a firm. To illustrate, an auditor faces this challenge while dealing with the valuation of assets. In order to understand this situation clearly, it is necessary to discuss the difference between fair value and historical cost. Under historical cost accounting, assets and liabilities are valued at original acquisition price and any increase or decrease in their market value over the years is not taken into account (Shome 1995, p.135). In contrast, assets and l iabilities are valued at the market price in the current date under the fair value accounting method (Wood 2009, p.344). Traditionally, books of accounts were kept at historical costs. However, fair value accounting replaced this conventional accounting practice nearly two decades ago and since then the assets and liabilities are measured at their current value estimates (Ramanna 2013). Today, most of the firms value assets and liabilities at the estimates of their current market value in order to give the stakeholders a detailed view of the financial status of the business. Since dubious assets/liabilities valuation practices have led to many corporate failures over the last decade, it is a challengeable task for auditors to certify the reliability of fair value accounting. Under such circumstances, a statutory auditor’s objectivity is likely to be questioned if he has any specific interest in the firm. Fair value accounting represents the social construction of reality wher eby legitimacy, power, and illusions are created. As experts point out, new epistemic criteria have to be created to address the socially constructed reality of fair value accounting. Fair value accounting clearly represents socially constructed reality, and auditors are expected to maintain professional ethics and legitimate practices (Jeppesen & Liempd 2011). In order to verify this socially constructed reality, auditor’s independence has to be specifically promoted. The auditor’s independence can significantly affect the credibility of financial statements (Olagunju 2011). Hence, there is a positive relationship between independence of an auditor and credibility of the financial statement (Ibid). In addition, an auditor’s independence can justify his objectivity to a great extent. The auditor’s independence has two distinct aspects including real independence and perceived independence (Sucher & MacLullich n.d.). Accomplishment of both these aspects is essential to achieve the ultimate goals of auditor’s independence. Real independence can be simply defined as the independence of the auditor or independence of the mind (Palmrose & Saul 2001). More precisely, real independence is related to the state of mind the auditor maintains and how he manages a particular situation. A really independent auditor would make independent decisions even though he is forced to handle a compromising condition by the company’
